This year Photokina is all about big cameras and big heavy lenses. Travel and street photographers in love with small form factor feel kinda abandoned. Ricoh GR III is probably the only significant small camera presented at Photokina 2018. Olympus did not bring anything new.
For me the winners of the show are:
- Panasonic full frame cameras tick all the boxes: resolution, IBIS, speed, video, AF, two memory slots, and L-mount alliance.
- Fujifilm dropped the bomb of affordable and compact medium format camera. If it comes with the prime pancake lens within 35-50mm, I’m selling my kidney.
- The significance of Zeiss ZX1 release lies in integration of Adobe Lightroom CC app within camera OS (probably some customized version of Android), Raw DNG, built-in memory, and the overall concept of seamless workflow web-integrated camera. It’s still a far shot from a software-defined camera but getting closer.
