I wonder if anyone ever has researched behavior patterns of 500px users and 500x licensing revenues. The site has its own proprietary popularity algorithm, based on views and likes. The major attraction point of 500px is instant gratification, any image posted immediately gets some attention (likes), not necessarily on any merits. I wonder if there is any correlation between high popularity ranking and licensing income of users. My assumption – it’s mostly vanity game, I doubt if 500px (as an entity) has any significant licensing revenues. Still I’m curious if for top users there is some reward event if occasional sales, or it’s entirely attention hunger game.
Still, community interaction is the strong side of 500px (probably the only one), which is a merit its own, notwithstanding lack of sales. So far 500px lost me on two issues – total lack of support and clumsy portfolio design. Basically the custom domain portfolio feature is the major selling point of the Awesome account. Yet a very small set of awkward barely functional SEO unfriendly templates and lack of any portfolio tools/features do not justify subscription fee. It’s not hard to foresee that in a short run the once promising 500px platform will turn into spammers’ den, abandoned by tired photography enthusiasts.
